Reduce Cost of Operations and Maximize return on Capital Investment

Data centers today consume almost 1% of the global electric energy supply. In 2012, in the U.S. alone, keeping data centers powered will cost more than $15 billion. Within the next 10 years, data center energy consumption is expected to quadruple increasing data center operating costs as a result. As data center energy demands continue to grow, carbon emissions from data centers are also surpassing U.S. airlines emissions. This trend is driving regulators to target data centers for increased regulation while energy prices are rising. In the light of all these challenges, CFOs today are looking for means to reduce operating costs while maximizing return on capital investments made in the data center.

The Data Center: Translating Fixed Costs into Variable Costs

The most adaptable, economically sustainable and best-managed data centers will be those where accurate and meaningful information about data center assets, resource use and status is continuously available – preferably from the lowest level (physical instrumentation points) of infrastructure up into the middle or higher levels of the IT stack. Not only this information can be utilized for improved operational efficiency but it can be leveraged for better fiscal planning, forecasting and management of the data center. With Power Assure EM/4 CFOs and data center management professionals will be able to:

  • Aggregate and calculate cost by user, business group and customer
  • Automatically track over-utilization and invoice internal or external customers with associated fees
  • Avoid costly, unnecessary construction of new data center
  • Free-up space and power by timely hardware refresh cycles and reducing the data center PUE making more power available to IT equipment
  • Maximize return on data center CapEx by utilizing all available power and space
  • Identify opportunities for effective capital investment within the data center
  • Support for Utility Rebates, demand response and other ancillary energy programs

Increasing demand for compute and storage capacity in the enterprise will continue to drive the imperative to better assess IT needs, assets at hand, and the infrastructure (space, power and cooling) to support it all for a given budget. As businesses are becoming more dependent on them, data centers are becoming more capital-intensive, particularly energy-intensive, and increasingly technical. This, in turn, makes operational management of data centers ever more important than before. Manage and control your data center operations with Power Assure EM/4 while driving for higher cost efficiency and increased reliability.
