Power Assure was an early entrant in the data center energy management market with its award-winning EM/4 software. In 2011, the company realized the benefits of its innovations by scoring key customer wins including NASA's massive data center consolidation project; pioneering a new standard in data center metrics; and forging critical alliances with ABB, Dominion Resources and In-Q-Tel.
"2011 has been a year full of impressive milestones for Power Assure as we execute against our goal to double the energy efficiency of every data center while improving reliability," said Brad Wurtz, president and CEO, Power Assure. "We are trail-blazing change in data center power management by delivering intuitive tools that allow data center managers understand their environment fully, generate multiple options for change along with the means to evaluate them, and in general allow them to make the most of the assets they manage, including energy itself."
According to IDC, the market for DCIM is set to grow considerably over the next five years. IDC predicts that through 2015, DCIM, including service and software revenue, will enjoy a healthy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.5%.
Product Innovation Power Assure continued to extend its technology excellence, delivering Data Center Analytics for its Energy Management software platform, EM/4. With this release, Power Assure not only gives IT managers real-time insight and intelligence into their data center performance, but also the ability to simulate 'what-if' scenarios, maximizing use of available space, power and cooling, thus, extending the useful life of virtually any data center. New in 2011, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Power Assure jointly announced a new UL standard, UL2640, based on Power Assure's PAR4 methodology. PAR4 accurately measures server power usage on a transaction per watt basis, IT knowledge workers to compare the exact efficiency of various models of servers, and plan their capacity with actual measurements instead of manufacturers estimates.
Strategic Alliances Power Assure strengthened its partner strategy with a deepening of its strategic relationship with global smart grid leader ABB. It integrated its EM/4 software with ABB's automation and control software and devices. ABB also led Power Assure's Series B financing and will OEM Power Assure software branded as part of its ABB Decathlon™ Data Center Enterprise Management (DCEM) product and services offering, bringing global reach and a well-established network of sales and support professionals to Power Assure's prospective customers in the data center.
Power Assure also signed a strategic investment and development agreement with In-Q-Tel (IQT), the strategic investment firm that identifies innovative technology solutions to support the missions of the U.S. Intelligence Community. Additionally, Power Assure received a strategic investment from Dominion Energy Technologies, Inc., an affiliate of Dominion Resources, one of the nation's largest producers and transporters of energy.
Corporate Momentum Late in the year, Power Assure closed additional equity financing of $14.5 million from ABB Technology Ventures, Dominion Energy Technologies, Good Energies, Point Judith Capital, and Draper Fisher Jurvetson to accelerate its pursuit of new market opportunities. With this new infusion of capital, more engineering and sales resources are being added to expand Power Assure's product portfolio and to aggressively pursue new sales opportunities, both through direct and indirect channels.
Industry Accolades In 2011 Power Assure was applauded by customers, analysts and influencers for its technology superiority and business accomplishments. It was recognized as a Gartner Cool Vendor in DCIM tools, Red Herring North America Top 100 company, Red Herring Global 100 company, Data Center Change and Innovation award winner, GigaOm Structure 50 company, and a 2011 Cleantech Open Alumni of the Year.
"This has been an exciting time for those of us who have believed in the promise of data center power optimization to reduce power costs, extend data center life and automate existing processes without compromising service levels," said Wurtz. "Our accomplishments and the recognition we've received from the IT and facilities communities have been extremely rewarding. But while awards are always nice, our most satisfying achievement has been seeing our customers routinely cutting their power use in half by using our EM/4 software."
